On Saturday, September 17, 2011 the Sacramento Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association (SVDHA) joined in a collaborative effort in the Elk Grove Unified School District. During the 6th Annual “Family Fun Day” School Readiness Fair event, held at Prairie Elementary School, everyone came together to provide children and families with community resources and information on school readiness, oral health, child development, and health screenings that included dental, vision, hearing, height and weight. “Fun activities” included face painting, a bounce house, live entertainment and free lunches for those in attendance.
Volunteer Dental Hygienists included:
Ellen Standley (our own CDHA Immediate Past President); Diann Azevedo (our lead hygiene coordinator for this event), Ashley Goerlich, and Irene Wilson hosted a table with education for children and families on oral health, tooth brushing technique, healthy foods and snacks, and dental disease; Kate Veranelli (of the Sacramento County’s Smile Keepers Program), assisted by Lisa Greenshields (who joined the Sacramento County Smile Keepers van to help provide screenings and fluoride vanish for 94 children), Karen Lemieux, Debbi Blanchard, and Bruce Blanchard.
Sacramento City College Dental Hygiene Students included:
David Bang, Liz Barba, Olga Borodenko (assisting families with paperwork needed for the care provided by the County), Mary Chow, Ivy Grace Hacinas, Darcie Larkey, Farm Saetem, Hannah Swedlund, Amy Truong, Sommer Vincent, and Esme Wilson. Some students rotated through the component hosted table, while others distributed information, pamphlets, and goodies. We really appreciated your presence and enjoyed your enthusiasm. Thanks so much for helping out!!
The Family Fun Event was very well orchestrated and volunteers were provided with lunch. Fun was had by all and we hope to see even more volunteers join in future SVDHA community outreach activities.

Volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services. Its generally intended to promote good or improve humanity, but people also volunteer for their own skill development, to meet others, to make contacts for possible employment, to have fun, and a variety of other reasons…..so volunteer for your own reasons!
On sept 26, several hygienists volunteered and provided dental hygiene services at a health fair organized by Tzu Chi international in Woodland. Tzu Chi international members tirelessly organize events that provide service to the underserved throughout California throughout the year. it's a great organization to be affiliated with. Were all privilege to have been there to provide palliative and preventive services to many who do not otherwise have access to health services. They were quite pleased to have received care which included ranging from dental hygiene and dental services to acupuncture, diabetes screening, eye exams, and hair cuts to name a few.

Rotary Dental Mission
Thanks to all for volunteering for the March Trip to Mexico. The Rotary Dental Mission was amazing. We had the largest group of providers we've ever had. We saw 135 patients in 2 days and most patients were able to have multiple treatments (mosting cleanings and fillings or extractions). We had 2 dentists from Mexico, 3 hygienists from California (2 from Orange County and 1 from Nevada County) and 5 dentists from Northern California (3 from Nevada County and 2 from Yuba County). We're nailing down a date for October and I'll let you know as soon as it's confirmed.
