RAMLA Remote Area Medical
On a personal note, I volunteered for the RAM event at the LA Arena for 4 days. What an experience! There were lots and lots of volunteers. Patients wanting services were lining up the night before as only 1200 wrist bands were issued daily. I did a prophy on a patient who had driven from Watsonville, she left home at 4:30 AM, got to the arena, got a wrist band and got these services: physical, hair cut (yes, that service was offered too), mammogram, eye exam and dental exam. She told me they provided lunch too to patients. A cellophane bag was given to them with a subway sandwich, a cookie and a cut apple (thank you Subway & McDonalds). Another patient I saw was in need of more than I could provide. I asked him where he lived so I could recommend he go to USC or W LA college hygiene dept for further care. He told me he lived on skid row but wasn t homeless, lived in a hotel….gotta admire them all for seeking care! It was an enriching, rewarding & uplifting experience…..try it, you ll like it!
Everyone was soooo generous in providing equipment: (used a new piezo ultrasonic device which was fabulous & goggles with a headlight on them which was wonderful) supplies, food, instruments and time. A lot of hygiene students were providing care as were dental assisting students.
Met Gretchen, RDH from Hesperia who heard on the news that there was a need for more volunteer RDH s, she grabbed her pillow and a blanket (she planned to sleep in her car) and drove down. I met her during lunch and invited her to spend the night at my hotel. The Radisson graciously offered rooms ½ price and happened to give me a room with 2 beds. The 2nd bed must have been for her!
I was even interviewed for Fox news! Short but sweet. AND of course a member of Sac Valley recorded it for me…THANK YOU Gail!
As many of you know, the moneys we get from the raffle tickets you buy, are donated for community outreach, this months collection will be donated to the RAM project http://www.ramfreeclinic.org.
You can view some of the photos I took, on the Sac Valleys Facebook page.

Cheryl Chan Retires
Cheryl Chan, current Director of Sacramento City College Dental Hygiene Program, has announced her retirement after 36 years. Throughout her career she has been an outstanding educator and an advocate for student success. Membership in the national, state and local professional association (ADHA, CDHA, SVDHA) has always been a priority, as demonstrated by her encouragement of students to also be actively involved.
Cheryl and her husband, Art, are retiring together. They look forward to traveling and already have a trip planned to Africa this summer. Cheryl will also be spending more time with family, especially her three grandchildren.
Congratulations to Cheryl for a long and distinguished career…from the Sacramento Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association. May retirement be all you wished for and more!!

Connecticut Legislature Moves on ADHP Program On March 23, the Joint Human Services Committee of the Connecticut General Assembly passed a bill that would create a "pilot" Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner (ADHP) program in that state. If passed by the Public Health Committee, which has joint jurisdiction, the measure would then head to the House floor.

Dallas TX- Concorde Career Colleges is looking for a Dental Hygiene Program Director for their new program in Dallas. We are seeing some changes in the way offices compensate their hygienists:
-11% of offices have reduced the number of dental hygienists they employ
-5% have cut compensation.
-hygienists are being paid hourly, rather then salary
-hygienists are being asked to “clock out” when there are no patients
-Instead of any raises, hygienists are on a bonus system based on achieving a minimum daily production."
Lets not forget that salaries are driven by supply and demand….this is true for all professions!
The FDA is in its final review of a product by Orapharma that was developed to buffer anesthetic we already use to exact physiological pH. It buffers the anesthetic. No extra injection. No change in technique. It provides immediate onset, no bee sting and less post treatment tissue morbidity. It expects to make the Onset™ Solution available this summer. more info.
Mandatory Paperless Offices?
All health records need to be computerized by 2015
Scheduled for completion in 2015, the National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) will be a communications system comparable to a network of highways, roads and pathways on which all health information will travel. Its purpose is to enable patients' electronic health records to be accessed and added to by all health care providers electronically (with patient authorization), virtually anywhere in the country, via the network. The electronic health record will include health information entered for a specific patient at a specific point of service. It will travel and be accessible on the NHII.
Falling under the purview of the Department of Health and Human Services, HHS defines it as "an initiative set forth to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and overall quality of health and health care in the U.S."
This site has helpful information:

Learning the medical side will also assist any office to learn how it works when you have to use both procedures codes and diagnostic codes. By 2015, all health records must be computerized.
