ADHA is making it easier for you to be a member of your professional association. Be counted. Your membership matters. As the trustee for the Sacramento Valley component, I want to give you a report of what I experienced and learned in the 3 days I attended. This is a VERY SHORT synopsis of my experience. Keep in mind there were several committee reports that I was not able to attend.

CDHA has a plan for the organization, its called the "Strategic Plan":

Goal 1- To serve as the recognized AUTHORITY for the profession. This is to be accomplished by a) increasing support and visibility of dental hygiene research; b) increasing awareness of RDHs as a source for oral health by using media and interacting with other health professionals such as RNs. c) increasing membership by each member reaching out to a non-member, involving non-members in CDHA events, promote advanced education/career opportunities and much more.

Goal 2- Achieve AUTONOMY of dental hygiene education, licensure and practice. (I think we have achieved that with our board!). We can continue to participate in oral health hearings, press releases, expand portability of the CA license.

Goal 3- Advocate DIRECT ACCESS to the services of Registered Dental Hygienists (we have achieved that partially with the RDHAP category), investigate new practice settings, educate the public on the role of hygienists.

The Oral Health Access Council OHAC http://www.oralhealthaccess.org/ is a multi-lateral, non-partisan effort directed toward improving the oral health status of the state's traditionally underserved and vulnerable populations. OHAC asked CDHA to allow them to vote by proxy to secure funds for children’s dental health projects from the government grants/monies. They want to be able to sign for our organization as it has more clout for getting funds. As a result of the new Health Bill the funds are there now and lots of people want them! The sooner we ask for them, the better. I urge all of you to read the ADHA magazine Access sent to you, or the online version: http://www.adha.org/governmental_affairs/stateline.htm. HR 3590 contains a number of oral health provisions outlined in the table .

Try this Great Product!

TAC 20% Topical Anesthetic--(Lidocaine 20%, Tetracaine 4%, Phenylephrine 2%) 20 gm jar ~ approximately $29. A compounding pharmacy will mix it for you. I used it instead of Oraquix and found it to be wonderful. You can find a compounding pharmacy in your area by clicking here.

According to the TAC information sheets, the product should be used prior to injection, scaling, root planing, frenectomies, laser and soft tissue procedures, and more. It is also available in a green, more viscous gel. Onset will occur within 1 minute and continue to increase its effectiveness within the following 3minutes. Peak effect will usually last 25 to 30 minutes. Time varies with individual patients. Do not use if patient sensitive to local anesthetics, allergy to PABA, hair dyes, sulfonamides. Extreme caution in elderly, patients with hyperthyroidism, bradycardia, myocardial disease or severe arteriosclerosis.

There are several products you can use to dispense it. I used a disposable endo syringe. Also: Micro Capillary Tips REF/UP 1120 Tip Length: 5 mm (green). This product can be purchased for approximately 20 cents per tip. Schein, Ultradent, or Vista also can be used. The company address is as follows:

Ultradent Products, Inc.
South Jordan, Utah

1-800-552-5512
Suck up about a stopper amount of red TAC into the syringe, attach a tip, and it's ready to go. One syringe usually does 2 quads SRP. Use only a few drops per site.

What happens to your body when you drink a coke?

http://svdha.org/cocacola.pngIn The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don't immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.

20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There's plenty of that at this particular moment).

40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.

45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

60 Minutes: The caffeine's diuretic properties come into play, [causing you the need to urinate]. It is now assured that you'll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.

>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you'll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You've also now, literally, [excreted] all the water that was in the Coke, but not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

Stick to water, real juice from fresh squeezed fruit, and tea without sweetener. However, the Coke itself is not the enemy here. It’s the dynamic combo of massive sugar doses combined with caffeine and phosphoric acid, which are found in almost all sodas.

2-1-1 is an easy to remember telephone number that, where available, connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities. Every hour of every day, someone in the United States needs essential services - from finding an after-school program to securing adequate care for a child or an aging parent.
