The Coach Approach: Communicate to Motivate through Brief Motivational Interviewing

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A famous quote says the definition of insanity is, “doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.” How often have you felt like you do the same thing over and over for patients, hoping for different results? This course will introduce dental professionals to the process known as Brief Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI empowers dental professionals to coach patients to change from “within” themselves. This CE workshop is highly interactive, allowing attendees to explore and practice the concepts of Brief Motivational Interviewing.

Coaching, active listening and asking open-ended questions will be utilized as ways to elicit change with your patients. Attending this workshop will empower you to experiment with the use of Brief MI in coaching your patients to achieve long-term oral health. Join us for a fun, dynamic program that will allow you to change your method of communication to empower your patients’ own motivation!

Purpose:  To provide dental hygienists information regarding their role in orthodontic therapies, including pre, active and post therapy phases. This session will include an overview of strategies, protocols and products aimed at creating successful, collaborative orthodontic treatment.

Vital Points Covered in the Lecture

  1. Understand the role of the dental hygienist/ dental team in recognizing patients who would benefit from orthodontic therapy.
  2. Discuss the periodontic/orthodontic connection.
  3. Identify the advantages of bio-adaptive therapy and minimally invasive approaches.
  4. Identify unique challenges faced by the orthodontic patient and understand daily care options and opportunities.

Adult orthodontics is a complicated and difficult sub-specialty of orthodontics.  While many adults have been told they are too old to have orthodontics, they secretly desire a beautiful smile.   Although adult patients have unique needs, they can obtain great results which lead to greater ease of home care and a new appreciation for their dental health.    Issues that must be considered when treating adults are lack of growth, fragile periodontal conditions, history of multiples restorations and soft tissue concerns due to the aging face.  Dr Giannetti and Dr Heir will present their treatment planning rationale, including caveats to adult orthodontics and expected outcomes.
